Trekking in Nepal

Shiva Excursion Team Having Rest.

The world surrounding us is quiet and still.  We watch in wonder as white, distant clouds glide easily across the snow-covered massifs, revealing ever more spectacular summits. In the midst of these giants, we feel small and insignificant, but count ourselves lucky to be here in this place where nature rules.

MISS. Jessica & Sally Enjoying View.
We walk slowly, placing one foot in front of the other, on one of the many routes that have been used for centuries.  The cobblestone steps, the rock-paved paths, the mud-soaked corridors ----- all conjure up images of people walking, walking, walking to small villages high in the Himalayas.  Often, we must suddenly leave the trail and scramble up the steep hillsides to allow a train of slow-moving yaks to pass.  The clank of the brass neck bells and the pungent dung left behind are constant reminders of their presence on the path.

On Way to Gokyo
Our hiking poles are our best friends.  They are our loyal and dependable companions as we traverse the steep climbs, slippery descents, and uneven terrain.  We, many times, put them up while negotiating the lengthy, gently swaying suspension bridges which span chasms where aqua blue glacial melt tumbles and boils as it rushes downstream. Most of the time, however, the poles are in our hands, keeping us safe and stable as we trek.

MIss. Sally Speechless at Gokyo Ri.
For us, one of the true joys of trekking is the occasional stop at tea houses along the route.  We sit on decks with the sunshine warming our bodies as we sip lemon ginger honey tea and gaze at the grandeur all around us.  Other trekkers talk of their adventures as we sit and socialize and listen to the tales of the mountains.

Best Friend forever
We urge you to visit this world of giants and experience the grandeur and isolation of close interactions with both nature and culture.  Whether it is Gokyo-Ri, Poon Hill, or any number of other treks, Shiva Excursion can arrange the perfect one for you!

Lukla Flight

Miss Sally Thode arrive at Lukla

As we glide over the terrain below, we look out the windows of our small, cramped plane, “ooohing” and “aaaaaahing” at the massive, snow-covered monoliths that seem much closer than they really are.  Our breath quickens when, through the windows of the open cockpit, we see the same view as the pilots……a small community built on the side of a huge mountain.  As we approach the houses and structures we are just a little uncomfortable upon seeing what we know intuitively to our landing site, an ever so small and narrow runway on the mountain smack dab in front of us!  Our hearts quicken and our hands instinctively curl around the seat armrests, gripping the only “secure objects” within reach turning our knuckles a pale white.  Almost immediately, our pilots head straight into the mountain and onto the runway, touching down then breaking and using the jet engines, urging the plane to slow down as it continues much too quickly uphill.“Uh-oh,” we think as we reach the end of the landing pad sensing a slowing of the vehicle but not nearly enough when suddenly, the plane turns to the right and into the “vestibule” where it stops just shy of the hanger.  “Whew,” we think as we attempt to put our hearts back into our chests, “That was one of the greatest and most exhilarating plane flights we have ever taken!”

As gear is offloaded and we have the opportunity to take in our surroundings, we find that we are, literally, on the side of a gigantic mountain, our first “up close and personal” taste of the Himalayas.  What a feeling-----both mind-numbing and unbelievable!  We are actually here in the land of Sherpas and mountains that defy description!  As we prepare to start our trek, we know that our lives have been forever changed.
Lukla  runway early Morning

Fast forward fifteen days to the end of our trek as we prepare to board another small plane in Lukla which will take us back to Kathmandu.  Reflecting on our incredible experience arriving, we are anticipating another hair raising adventure as we fly out.  We are not disappointed!  Settled in our seats, we feel and hear the plane rev up to maximum power.  Suddenly, we are careening downhill on the short runway at breakneck speed.  At the last possible moment, the plane gives a mighty thrust upward, leaving the runway and turning sharply to avoid the neighboring mountain looming in front of us.  We are safely up and away as the colossal monoliths slowly fade away around us.

Dal Bhat is the main course of Nepalese. It is a daily food for most of the Nepalese eaten twice a day as a lunch and dinner. Dal Bhat comes with rice, lentil soup (Dal soup), veg curry, pickle, papad, green salad, curd, ghee/butter and so on. Even at the same place, it comes with different taste at different times. People can add chicken curry, mutton curry, omelet as per their choice. The biggest feature of Dal Bhat is you can get as much as the food you can eat at the same price.
